For years, I believed career success was defined by titles, seniority, and a big pay cheque. I pursued it all on auto-pilot, and, I achieved it. But despite reaching the milestones I’d set for myself, something still felt empty. I had the external markers of success, but I was struggling internally. I’d worked my way up, but the higher I climbed, the more I realised I was stuck in a career that left me unfulfilled.
If you’re reading this, you might feel the same way—wondering if this is all there is for the rest of your working life. If you’re feeling the pull towards something more meaningful, you’re not alone. Here’s what I’ve learned about redefining success and finding true fulfilment at work.
Why traditional success falls short
For many of us, success is handed down as a checklist: climb the ladder, earn more, and keep pushing for that next promotion. We’re told this is the way to happiness, but what if it’s not? In my experience, it wasn’t. Despite the achievements, I found myself weighed down by imposter syndrome, constant low mood, and an overwhelming sense that I was just going through the motions. Some days, I couldn’t even get out of bed. I knew something had to change, and that something was me.
In recent years, we’ve seen a noticeable shift in how people view success. The new generation entering the workforce isn’t just focused on the pay cheque; they’re seeking flexibility, fulfilment, and meaningful projects. They aren’t looking to follow one straight path but want careers that align with who they are and what they truly care about.
What real success looks like (and how it’s changed for me)
When I decided to leave my six-figure senior role behind and start “from scratch,” my focus shifted. I realised success isn’t about what others see; it’s about how I feel day-to-day. Now, I define success as living in alignment with my core values, being of service, and helping others live more fulfilling lives. It’s about feeling energised by what I do, not drained by it.
True success, for me, is finding a balance between personal growth and making a positive impact on others. It’s about knowing that my actions matter, not just for me but for those I support.

How to start redefining your career success
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like something is missing, it might be time to redefine what success looks like for you. Here are some steps to help you do this:
Step 1: Reflect on what truly matters to you
• Take some time to identify your core values. What do you stand for? What makes you feel most alive or connected? Write down the top five values that resonate with you the most. These will become your compass for defining your new version of success.
Step 2: Identify what drains and fulfils you
• Make a list of your daily tasks at work and ask yourself: Which ones energise you? Which leave you feeling depleted? The goal is to gradually shift towards activities that align with your strengths and values while minimising those that don’t.
Step 3: Embrace small experiments
• You don’t have to make a drastic leap all at once. Start by exploring new projects, roles, or even volunteer opportunities that align with your values. These small steps can help you test new waters while gaining clarity on what truly fulfils you.
Step 4: Set clear intentions
• Define what a purpose-driven career looks like to you. Set clear, tangible goals that align with this vision. This might include finding a new role that aligns better with your values or adjusting your current role to include more meaningful work.
Step 5: Seek support
• Redefining success is a journey, and it’s okay to seek help. Whether it’s a career coach, a mentor, or a supportive friend, having someone to guide you can make the process less daunting and more rewarding.
Embracing your redefined success
Redefining career success is about shifting from what’s expected to what truly matters to you. It’s not always easy to go against the grain, especially when you’ve built a career around traditional markers. But trust me—it’s worth it. When your work aligns with your core values, each day feels more meaningful, and life itself becomes more fulfilling.
If this resonates with you, consider starting small. It only takes one step to start changing the course of your career and your life.
